Social Media News

My 2018 Social Media Predictions

I recently contributed to an expert voice blog published by Talkwalker. 10 experts were asked to share their social media predictions for 2018 and here are JSB’s:

1. News-jacking

A successful news-jacking campaign can produce enormous results in terms of increased website traffic and brand positioning. But social monitoring is required to ensure you have your index finger on the pulse of what’s making news and what’s captivating the interest of the Internet nation. Choose your news-jacking opportunities wisely and always ask yourself, ‘is it right for my brand to step into this conversation and right now?’ You don’t want to damage your brand with a misjudged news-jacking that backfires!

2. Advocacy Marketing

Advocacy marketing is a tactic that will rocket brands into a new digital stratosphere if they can leverage the power of their online community. This form of organic marketing sees the customer stepping into a brand advocate role with product or service reviews and recommendations which drive leads and increase sales. The smartphone has revolutionised consumer behaviour. Mobile will continue to dominate search but conversions on mobile will also increase because of advocacy marketing.

But let me throw another into the mix.

3. Facebook Watch

Watch this space as more content creators including media organisations create online-only content in partnership with the social media giant.

Interview | Santa Claus!

In today’s show I interview Santa Claus who is joining us live from the North Pole.

For those of you who are loyal and repeat listeners to JSB Talks Digital, you will be aware that I had Santa on last year’s Christmas special podcast. The feedback was amazing and the YouTube video of the interview was played in schools across the world!

This year, my co-host Bobby had some questions prepared for Santa!

Q1: How do you get down the chimney?

My magic Santa suit shrinks me to fit down any chimney! Have you seen the size of Chimneys in China?!

Q2: How are still alive after 2,000 years?

I am Santa. I live forever. I live for the children of this world, so they can experience the true joy of Christmas and celebrating our traditions with their families. It’s a very special time.

Q3: How does your Santa suit still fit you?

Bobby are you suggesting I’ve put on weight? Ho ho ho!

This suit grows with me and shrinks with me. I told you already! It’s magic.

Q4: Why do you live in the North Pole

I have to live in a place where nobody can access me, Mrs Claus or the elves. Otherwise, I would be inundated with selfie requests from parents and children begging me for toys all year round. But also, it’s because my reindeer and the elves are from here.

Q5: How did you find and choose the Reindeer?

Well now you know why I chose the North Pole to live, because they have lots of Reindeer. Many many years ago I had interviews to search for my top nine reindeer who would accompany me around the world every year. So, as you probably know I have Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen who lead my sleigh across the world.

Did you know the names of the magical flying animals came from a poem from 1823 called The Night Before Christmas?

Q6: How did Rudolph get his red nose?

Ah yes, the most famous reindeer, Rudolph! Rudolph’s legendary luminous red nose, which help to protect it from freezing during sleigh rides and to regulate the temperature of the reindeer’s brain, factors essential for flying reindeer pulling Santa Claus’s sleigh under extreme temperatures.

Q7: Did you get my letter Santa?

Why yes Santa, it arrived from Ireland with priority post today. You live in Barna now don’t you? Yes, yes! I have it is now with the Elves who are busy working away on your special delivery!

Q8: Can you give young people some good advice about cyber bullying Santa, it’s not cool! is it?

Yes of course Bobby. I am so glad you have asked me to do this. Cyber bullying, or being mean to people is not cool! In fact, Bobby, did you know that being really mean to people could result in you breaking the law. Don’t be mean online. If you can’t be nice, don’t be naughty. Google will remember your mean comments forever, and I know Google very well!

I also had some social media specific questions:

Q9: Last year we discussed how useful social media is to communicate with parents and see what’s happening in houses, but I want to know, because social media is moving so fast, what is your favourite social network and why?

My favourite social network is Facebook. You know, I get to see all the Mums and Dads on there, so proud of their children. I also like Facebook because it allows me to share my travels from the North Pole around the world on Facebook Live and I can share a little bit of Christmas Eve magic with parents who then show their children.

Q10: You are always talking about children writing their list, but are you building your list – your email list that is? We know how important it is to converting prospects into customers.

Ho Ho Ho Joanne! You are so very funny! There’s a reason you call yourself JSB Talks Digital because you are thinking about digital marketing all the time! Yes Yes! I listened to your podcast about How to convert leads into customers and in 2018 I’m going to start blogging! You are so digitally smart! I love your podcast for those tips and tricks! I might talk to you about my blogging strategy separately!

Q11: I’ve been following your social media updates Santa and I love your use of the Behind the Scenes with Video. But when are you going to embrace Stories – on Snapchat and Instagram?

Oh JSB, I am so busy, I don’t think I can add any more social networks to my long list of channels. But I hear you. I know lots of younger people like Stories, so I will be also taking your advice and using Snapchat and Insta more in 2018. Ho, Ho, Ho JSB, you really are a powerhouse of digital knowledge! When are you going to work with President Trump in the White House?

Santa thank you to you, Mrs Claus and to your elves and virtual assistants for all the excellent work you do! Have a very Merry Christmas and a relaxing New Year!

Social Media Tool of the Week | Google Analytics UTM Builder

The social media tool that saved my working week this week is Google Analytics URL Builder.

For those of who that are producing, publishing and sharing lots of premium content, it’s vital we understand the role social plays in amplifying our content.

The Google Analytics URL Builder is a free Chrome extension that lets you quickly craft UTM URLs for your social posts without having to leave the page.

Why UTM tracking?

Campaign tracking simply allows you to add special tracking code to your URL, also known as ‘tagging’ URLs, to identify how users are getting to your site. For example:

Get it here.
